Ambassador T.S. Tirumurti was in the Indian Foreign Service with a diplomatic career spanning 37 years between 1985–2022. He served as Ambassador / Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations in New York between 2020–2022. He was President of the UN Security Council for August 2021. He was Chair of three Committees in the UN Security Council including Counter-terrorism Committee, Taliban Sanctions Committee and Libya Sanctions Committee.

Prior to this, Mr Tirumurti was Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs between 2018–2020, in-charge of Arab countries and Africa as well as development partnership and economic relations. As Secretary, Tirumurti was also India’s Sherpa for BRICS. He was Director of EximBank of India.

Mr Tirumurti has previously served in Cairo, Geneva (Permanent Mission to UN in Geneva), Gaza, Washington D.C., Jakarta (DCM) and was also India’s High Commissioner to Malaysia between 2013–2018. He was India’s first Representative to the Palestinian Authority in Gaza between 1996–98.

Presently Ambassador Tirumurti is Distinguished Professor, Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Chennai. He is also on the Board of Governors of the Dhirubhai Ambani University, Gandhinagar, Gujarat.

He is the author of three books. He has been writing extensively in the print media on contemporary foreign policy issues and speaking at Indian Universities.
